Rated S for the searing pain only the love of a Silver can cause, though war divides many hearts

All Will Burn

Mare Barrow is a prisoner of the King of Norta, Maven. More so, she’s powerless. No lightning and no escape. In chains, she’s once again put on display, but not as a princess like before. She’s put on display as the new blood that is forced to betray the Scarlet Guard, the people she loves, and herself. Many times, she tries to break free. It’s the silent stone shackles around her wrists and ankles that keeps her powers locked up. She refuses to let it or Maven break her.

The Scarlet Guard isn’t hiding any longer. They’re ready for war. The tension between everyone might stop it before it gets started however. The exiled prince, Cal is lost without her and will do anything to get her back. Even destroy his brother and anything else in his path.

Reds turn on Reds. Silvers turn on Silvers. Brother turns on brother.

I’m still a damn mess over Shade. It’s ugly ya’ll. And every time he was brought up…

Now, Mare is locked up and I can’t even handle that. She gave herself up! Just as I worried she may turn into a monster, she fell into a helpless heap. Well, not helpless. But, I couldn’t help her. I wanted to jump into the book and help her so badly. So much hurt and heartbreak.

I actually had to wait to start this book because my emotions were all over the place. Just so much hurt. So much loss. And this loss is strangely different for me than it is in other books. While reading this series, I’ve gotten such an in-depth look into Mare’s life and seen how much things matter for her. It’s such a close perspective and every bit that she’s ripped into rips into me.

The war isn’t just talk now. It’s happening. Nobody is safe. Not a single person. There were so many times I gasped aloud as I read, and forget my nails. They got chomped right off. From an assassination attempt to torture, this was dark. However, there were unique alliances made that really surprised the feck out of me. Many more unexpected twists turned like a blade in me, instilling in me that everything is not always as it seems with anyone.

When Mare and Cal finally did reunite, it was like finally getting able to breathe until it wasn’t. And I totally caught that Grey’s Anatomy moment and it shattered me. The two of them sure are cute though. Dance in the rain cute.

However, this drama-llama she’s got between both brothers is done. I’m not heeding it. Not one bit. I’m not here for a triangle. I’m here for the lightning girl. She cares about both of them and in a way, I can see why. But, I can’t focus on them because I’m focused on my girl, here. I can’t be bothered by dream fictional guys this time.

For some light, happiness, a spot of blue sky—more new bloods and some are like Mare! Oh, to know she didn’t have to feel utterly alone was so beautiful. It’s so exciting! And the imagery! *whistles* YASSSSS.

Hell, the whole reunion for Mare and her family—everyone—was just sending my heart soaring.

I really can’t find a fault in this installation of the series. It was gorgeous and chilling!. I latched on and still haven’t let go. Powerful imagery. Such well thought out plot points. Aveyard really didn’t rush things and I LOVE it when that happens. There’s no reason to rush things all the time. Look at everything along the way. Aveyard didn’t just look though. She dragged my butt right through the mud. Lol.

Overall

This series keeps getting more powerful with every book and War Storm is the final book. Not ready for it at all. Glad to wait for it to release to paperback. Completely A-okay with it.  However, I’m so unbelievably nervous. This is like coming up on the final season of Game of Thrones. While many people already know since War Storm is out, I don’t know. LOL. Anyway, I just get that churning feeling that a lot of people aren’t going to make, one of them being Mare. And after she’s developed so much in this book, that makes me so sad.

Rated P for powerful storytelling that’s more than just romance, even though it’s sweetly predictable.

Can you love someone you can never touch?

Stella Grant has been in and out of the hospital all her life. She has cystic fibrosis and follows a specific regimen to keep her oxygen levels up as she waits for new lungs. That also means staying away from anything and anyone. She keeps up a YouTube channel keeping people informed about CF and also keeping herself connected to the world.

Then in comes Will Newman, also living with CF but a more serious strain that could jeopardize everything Stella has worked for, but she’s never wanted to break the rules more than right now. Will is sarcastic and reckless, but he makes her want to live. In an effort to find some sort of middle ground she decides to claim one foot back in her life. Instead of staying six feet apart from everything she’ll take it to five feet. Is it enough though? With Will, it is.

I’m so excited to see the movie! While I know this book pairs with the script rather than coming first, I wanted to read it first. It wasn’t so much that I wanted to prepare myself before going to see the movie either. It was because I wanted to see if the book was as beautiful as the trailer, and what I assume the movie will be. And it was.

The book was moving. I’ve maybe cried four times in all from books I’ve read. I didn’t cry during this book, but my heart did fall out of my body with a splat. Emotions pounded me like tidal waves. Poe, the bestest best friend with phenomenal cooking skills. Will, the sarcastic one with the charming smile that could care less. Stella, the determined and in control one determined to learn everything she can. And Nurse Barb, the warrior who protects them and their lungs. While cystic fibrosis rules their lungs, it doesn’t rule their hearts.

Will and Stella became Sour Patch Kids: sour but sweet. Really really REALLY sweet and they didn’t bust my tastebuds or turn them raw after too many. I couldn’t get enough of them and their ridiculous romantic antics.

This book was truly a beautiful and endearing story of overcoming odds and circumstance while also learning to deal and make the best of a real tough situation that’s basically impossible. They didn’t stop living their lives even though they’re all missing out on so much. Because of each other, all of them lived their best lives and my heart was overflowed with the feels!

And this is one of those books. You get so much beauty and love and blooming goodness that when you get slammed with the sadness…YOU…GET…SLAMMED. It brings out the realness of how life can take things away from with the snap of your fingers and it’s painful and it’s very real. It was very real in this book.

Pintrest

The education of cystic fibrosis is so well done. Getting educated has never been more heartbreaking and informational than the two POVS of Will and Stella. I wasn’t turned off by it or annoyed. It wasn’t shoved down my throat. It came from people, albeit fictional, but still. It wasn’t textbook. It was moving and real. I got to discover more than I ever knew about CF and see its effects from more than just the medical standpoint.

Overall

Cute, humorous, and heart-jerking. I really enjoyed this book. I really value learning more about CF and the tolls it takes on lives. I can’t wait to see the movie. I’m hoping it’ll move my heart as much as the book has.

Quotables:

“It’s just life. It’ll be over before we know it.” (Will to Stella, p. 30)

“If I’m going to die, I’d like to actually live first.” (Will to Stella, p. 33)

“So is your plan to die really, really smart so you can join the debate team of the dead.” (Will to Stella, p. 105)

“When you have CF, you don’t know how much time you have left. But, honestly, you don’t know how much time the ones you love have left either.” (Stella, p. 155)

“Cystic fibrosis will steal no more from me. From now one, I am the thief.” (Stella, 172)

K-I-S-S-I-N-G (Naomi + Ely’s No Kiss List – A Book Review)

Naomi + Ely’s No Kiss List
Author: Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
Published: 2007
FullSizeRender (1)

Rating: Full boltFull boltFull boltHalf bolt

Naomi and Ely, best friends, who grew up in the same building and went through everything together, even the divorce of Naomi’s parents, though that’s partly because her dad slept with one of Ely’s moms. That’s only the tip of the it’s complicated train. Naomi is irrevocably in love with Ely and dreams that one day they’ll get married. A slight hitch? Ely’s gay.

Naomi and Ely created a No Kiss List of people so that they never get into a fight. And then Ely break that list by kissing Naomi’s current boyfriend. Cue the explosion. This epic betrayal tests their friendship and both wonder: will they ever get past this? Can they get past this?

N+E - Tumblr

Now, I couldn’t get fully on board with this book for a couple of reasons. It was a nice book about two friends needing to see where they could go and fit into the world without each other, but it struggled at doing even that. Cue Spoiler: I couldn’t get past how neither character could take the responsibility for anything they did wrong. While it’s ridiculous that I say this, I couldn’t handle how self-absorbed they were either. Their disregard for people around them was a bit unbearable, but that didn’t make the book terrible. Not at all. I just didn’t like the characters. It happens sometimes.

However, the in-depth and personal look at lifelong friendship was intense and really made me question if friendship really can withstand anything. This book is a great example of how gut-wrenching heartache can be when it’s caused by somebody you’ve shared everything with and trust with your entire being.

Broken heart - WiffleGif

I love-love-loved the way this was written with emojis, and through other characters’ POV. The emojis made the book more fun and kept in touch with how the characters communicate while also bringing the reader to the modern day of technology. The use of other characters’ POVs (point of view) gives the reader great perspective to not only how the main characters are imploding, but to how the outside characters are affected by it as well. It puts the reader with them as if they live in the building with Naomi and Ely, making them a part of the drama.

The heartache stays with you. It comes from every direction-friends, family, lovers and even crushes, bringing real issues to the front line, like divorce, financial problems, identity crisis, and more. Which, shows that sometimes a heart can’t be completely repaired no matter how much you love somebody and that people change even when you don’t realize it right away.

“Buffy could be a bitch, but cut the girls some slack—she once had to kill her true love in order to save the world. I get it, Naomi. You’re like Buffy.” (Gabriel to Naomi, p. 118)

“…even though I really liked her as a person, I didn’t really think I liked her as a girl, because when you like a girl, there’s this ignition—you can feel it—and with her, there wasn’t any ignition…” (Boy Robin, p. 156)

“You didn’t think it would be easy, did you?” (Neal to Ely, p. 198)

“It’s like Naomi always used to say: Life tells you to take the elevators, but love tells you to take the stairs.” (Ely, p. 209)
